Trusting LA British Food Invasion

Just received your email a few minutes ago and wouldn’t you know Leanna and I shopped at the Fresh and Easy on Monday after reading a story about the opening in the LAT. Well, we weren’t too impressed with the presentation of the food products in the place. For example you buy much of the produce by the piece so you don’t know the price per pound and that makes it hard to compare to Vons and the other stores. But, the bigger thing for me is when I was checking out. I asked the woman helping me with my groceries how she liked working there and she said, “fine”. So, then I asked if they, the workers, were union and she told me that no they weren’t, they didn’t want a union because it would “get in the way”, what ever the heck that meant. Well, I said that I had just retired from a community college where I was president of the union and that I found that unions were good. She told me to “get out” or “go away” very curtly. And about this time another man came steaming over to talk with me and told her to shut up. While she was still there I asked, “Well, if you have trouble with a manager or the boss, how do you handle it? Who helps you?” And the guy answers we handle it ourselves. I said that doesn’t work well in my experience because there is not equality between managers and the line workers. Well, he said that everyone is the same at Fresh and Easy, same wages, same health benefits, etc. Well I was amazed and I asked what wages that everyone received and he said $10.00 per hour and then he began hedging/mumbling that managers maybe got more. Ah ha! So I asked, are you a manger and he said that he was (The woman who was first helping me was a “manager”, too but I think she was shooed away because she didn’t know how to handle questions about union and her angry comments to go away attracted the other manager.). $10 doesn’t’ come hour anywhere near union wages and health care is not paid for by the company although he said that the company paid part of the cost.

I walked the line with the workers on many days and nights during the big strike and I really resent this company coming in and paying cheap wages and managers claiming that the workers don’t want a union.

-- Hollis Stewart

The Meaning of America

The United States has a long history of civil rights abuse and torture. Prior to its existence the forefathers of the United States committed horrendous acts. In its early days there was the killing of Native Americans and the taking their lands. They were used as slaves until their numbers were too inadequate for the tasks required by their taskmasters. Africans were brought and bought to replace them.
The American doctrine of Manifest Destiny justified the further mistreatment of Native Americans as the United States expanded westward. The "Trail of Tears" and the "Long Walk of the Navajos" were recorded war crimes of the United States. Innumerable instances exist which are not as infamous. Sherman's March to the Sea is still another war crime done to a civil population of its own citizens. The dropping of the 2 atomic bombs on Japanese civilians is a more recent atrocity.

What does the recent discussion on torture have to say about the United States as a nation, as a people? Nothing different than the 300 years of its past history. The United States is a brutal, inhumane organization which is very slowly developing toward a more humane society. As for its people, may God help them, because they are currently being led by evil people comparable to the Beast of John's Biblical Revelations.

I frankly don't understand how you can claim that Obama is getting a free pass from the Right wing. Days after his announcement, Fox News ran a story claiming that he had attended a radical madrassa in Indonesia (Fox tried to also hurt Hillary with this one, by claiming that her campaign had leaked the info ) They regularly trot out Ann Coulter to refer to him not by his first name, but as "B. Hussein Obama", just to remind everyone that he shares a name with the former president of Iraq, as if such a fact meant anything. Sean Hannity has gone so far as to accuse Obama's minister of espousing a radical, racist, Black nationalist creed.

I don't even have a TV, so I can't watch Fox or any other news channel. Still, I've heard about such tarring of Obama on that channel's airwaves. I've also seen the 18-page "Obama exposed" dossier The idea that the right is giving him a free pass is absurd. On the contrary, they've seen that he fares much better in head-to-head matchups against Republican candidates than Hillary does.

I think we Democrats should avoid trying to earn credentials for our preferred candidates by boasting about how much those candidates have been attacked by the right. We have a very good slate of candidates, all of whom would be a formidable challenge for any of the Republicans in the general election. The Republicans and their allies in the media know this, and they're blasting all the Dems equally.

Linda,

Again, very good article. I agree that we have a tendency to act as if everything is okay but I don't think the tendency is an American phenomenon. I read an article recently about life in the breakaway republics of the former Soviet Union. A woman was asked what it was like to live in the USSR during the year leading up to the dismantling. Her reply was that the average person had no clue that anything was happening. She said the masses lived their lives like everything was okay up until maybe 2 weeks before the wall came down!!

Amazing.

Ara,

Thanks for the clarification.
"A Cab Ride with Xavier Becerra" -- June 2007 Northeast Democrat

From: Dick_Sharon Price [mailto:dick_and_sharon@yahoo.com]
Sent: Saturday, June 16, 2007 6:08 PM
To: Ara Amirkhanian
Subject: RE: XAVIER BECERRA MAY REPRESENT THE 31ST CONGRESSIONAL DISTRICT BUT HE DOES NOT REPRESENT ME

Ara,

Do you mind if I post this exchange as comments to the article Sharon and I wrote on the NEDC website (www.northeastdemocrats.org). We'd like to have this kind of commentary there.

On your response, your passion is admirable but some of your rhetorical games are a bit slippery. For example, neither Congressman Becerra nor our article say some of the things you have "some Democrats saying." He doesn't say and we don't say, for example, that the reason not to impeach is so that crazy bunch of right-wing nuts are still in office for the 2008 elections.

Also, while I personally agree with your main points -- and my wife *really* agrees with you -- you still don't answer the main point of my response: "but again, it's more important to me that we start electing a long string of progressive, populist, left-leaning Congresses and presidents who will undo the damage Reagan, Bush, and Bush have done to my country."

Anyway, let's continue this on the Website, okay?

Cheers,

-- Dick

Ara Amirkhanian <aamirkhanian@sbcglobal.net> wrote:

Dear Dick,

Now that they are in control (thanks to the Anti-war sentiments in this country, the Democrats are coming up with all kinds of lousy and false excuses to slow down or altogether avoid, impeaching the criminals in the White House. job

You had commented below that “Xavier Becerra says that he does favor impeaching Bush and Cheney, but thinks that the effort would take the rest of their term, likely not succeed, and certainly divert from efforts to begin getting the country out of Iraq and back on track.” So I’d like to ask him a couple of simple questions.

How does Becerra think that the justice system should deal with a criminal in this country? What is U.S. policy in regards to dealing with traitors to our Nation? What do we do with someone who does not respond to subpoenas issued by Congress or the courts? Since when do we avoid prosecuting someone in this country because it takes too long? What is this excuse that they would be out of office before they are impeached? Who cares if they are?

Almost very member of the Bush Cabinet is guilty of at least on or more of the following:

1. Lying misinforming, and manipulating the American people to take them to an illegal war, which put our Nation, our troops, the people they took an oath to protect in harms way.

2. Misinforming the public about the dangers to our Nation. (Saddam/ Al Qaeda/ 911 connection)

3. Use of illegal weapons under international and domestic laws (depleted Uranium, and cluster bombs and many more)

4. Attempting to legalize and authorize the use of torture (Gonzales, Rumsfeld, Bush et al)

5. Perjury and conspiracy to commit perjury (Carl Rove, Chaney et al)

6. Money laundering and Racketeering (Libby)

7. Outing of a CIA undercover agent which possibly has caused the death off many involved (Treason by those responsible)

8. Supporting and funding terrorist States (Al Qaeda, Saddam et al)

9. Profiting from Financial dealings with a country under strict U.S. sanctions (Chaney while CEO of Halliburton from 1997 to 2000)

10. Illegal Wire taping and eves dropping on Americans (Bush, Chaney et al)

11. Lying to the 9/11 commission (Rice, tenet et al)

12. Lying to the Congress

13. Misleading the Congress

14. Overt Secrecy under the guise of National Security

15. And many actions that are deemed unconstitutional.

They ought to be imprisoned for what they’ve done to this country not given an easy way out, and that is what the Democrats are doing.

When Asked by a supporter whether there was a way citizens could impeach Bush "here and now," Senator Feingold said he first wants to hear the administration's justification for conducting domestic surveillance before determining what, if any, punishment should occur… Once that is known, there should be accountability. "I'm not going to prejudge what that accountability should be." he said. But what is there for the Administration to justify? They have already admitted on doing the crime. There is no question about that; none; legally or otherwise.
So why delay???

There are a few hidden reasons why the Democrats are reluctant to hold the administration accountable and the Democratic Party isn’t behind the Impeachment efforts, neither of which speak very highly of them— the Democrats are once again putting what they think is best for the party ahead of what’s best for the country.

1. Democrats want Bush & Cheney to be in office in 2008 so they can use their unpopularity to win more elections.

2. They say that they are reluctant because the impeachment will require Republican support; they fear that it can’t be successful. “Supporting a failed attempt would look bad” for them. They say.

This retreat and the overtly cautious approach by the timid Democrats today only encourages the so called leaders (corporate prostitutes as I like to call them) in Washington to allow the illegal occupation of Iraq to continue and maybe even turn it into a perpetual war as their war profiteering corporate friends would like it to be by attacking Iran; Syria and who know where next; risk the lives of our young and brave kids, while these same politicians won’t even risk their careers.

If they aren’t reelected politicians have a grater chance of recovery from their failed careers than dead and some luckier maimed soldiers, and war ridden Iraqi civilians. That’s why we need to demand that all politicians to get off of their fragile butts and push for the impeachment. We’ll need to shame some of them into doing the right thing, and many Americans intent to do just that. There are no excuses to close our eyes to the crimes against humanity perpetrated by these Neo-Cons.

These criminals are not above the law and they sure as hell can’t be allowed to escape their responsibility and accountabilities simply because they are public officials. They were entrusted these positions to serve us, not vise versa. Our system isn’t a dictatorship (yet).

And if the Democrats play it right which I highly doubt it from what I see, we will not turn into one anytime soon.

I thank you for responding to my earlier ranting, and I apologize if I sound less forgiving than you may have chose to be, and for my long winded response to your e-mail. I also appreciate your willingness and courage to cover the impeachment attempts, and I hope you will have good input to be able to do a comprehensive coverage of that story.

Warmest regards,

Ara
