A Democratic Club is an official association of local Democrats who come together to discuss, debate, and work to promote Democratic candidates and legislation in their city, town, neighborhood, or region. They can be geographically-based, in which case they focus on a broad spectrum of issues in the communities they serve. They can also be issues-based, with a focus on one or more topics, such as gay rights or environmental matters. Some clubs also have a strong social component. Read the rest ... "The Northeast Democrat" -- June 2006: "Through Thick and Thin" The famous twentieth century wit Will Rogers once said, “I’m not a member of any organized political party…I’m a Democrat.” His words resonate in June, the month of the Democratic primary election. As is often the case, Democrats seem to be battling mightily among themselves. In Connecticut, insurgent Democratic candidate Ned Lamont is mounting a strong challenge to the renomination of incumbent US Senator (and former vice presidential candidate) Joe Lieberman. In California, consultant Marcy Winograd is making great strides in her campaign to deny renomination to Jane Harman, in a coastal congressional seat, in the South Bay. Both Lamont and Winograd are calling for an end to the Iraq War and a rapid withdrawal of US troops. So is Bob McCloskey, who is opposing incumbent Democratic Congressman Adam Schiff of Glendale. It is still too early to tell whether these candidacies presage the emergence of a coordinated anti-war movement within the party, but they certainly merit your attention in the days ahead. Turner—who has lived and worked in the 48th District for the last 48 years after moving here from New Orleans as a child—is the senior field deputy for Lee Baca, the Los Angeles County Sheriff.
