Bridges, Not Walls

On May 4, the Los Angeles Times published an article on the growing unease some Blacks feel about the recent immigrant-rights controversy. The topic has been covered on a host of radio and television programs as well as national publications. The point most of this coverage makes is that some African-Americans, many of which are longtime loyal Democrats, believe immigration is hurting US workers. Is this true or is the real issue lack of a just global economic development policy, both in the US and Mexico? Here we examine the underlying economic causes.

Issues on Parade
April’s inciteful discussion of the growing immigrant-rights debate featured Rep. Xavier Becerra, Housing Commissioner Pete Navarro, and Father Richard Estrada. For May, we plan to look at the immigration question from a different perspective: how to build coalitions with immigrant groups and traditional Democratic strongholds. Speakers will include long-time Chicano activitist Jose Calderon and Bishop Edward Turner, a candidate for the 48th Assembly District who also works to reduce interracial conflict in LA’s jails.

The Northeast Democratic Club is supporting Lummis Day, a celebration of the diverse culture and rich history of Northeast Los Angeles, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., on Sunday, June 4th. Festivities begin with a poetry reading at El Alisal, the Charles Lummis house that the City of Los Angeles operates as a museum and headquarters of the Historical Society of Southern California.....
