"The Northeast Democrat" -- April 2006: Club News: “Endorsements”

The California Democratic Council’s 54th Annual Convention, held in Santa Clara, March 24th to 26th, drew 250 representatives from perhaps three dozen Democratic clubs from throughout California. Joining delegates from other LA County clubs, NEDC’s two representatives were the only ones from the City of Los Angeles....

"The Northeast Democrat" -- April 2006: "Taking It to the Streets"

Sometimes it is quite easy to recognize an historical moment. In the past few weeks, more than two million Americans have demonstrated against proposed immigration reform measures. 300,000 took to the streets of Chicago. Tens of thousands are marching in Costa Mesa, in normally conservative Orange County. Recently, between 500,000 and one million demonstrators jammed the streets of downtown Los Angeles. It was, by far, the most massive demonstration in the history of the city. By any measure, we are living through a unique period of the nation’s history....

"The Northeast Democrat" -- April 2006: "Minutes in a Minute"

Happy to be back at our regular meeting place, El Arco Iris Restaurant, the March meeting was another endorsement meeting. Called to order at about 7:05 p.m., as I ran to get there from the restaurant next door, the club took care of preliminary business....:

Once an activist...

Dear Fellow Northeast Democrats,

Last week I went to the Arroyo Seco library to read a copy of Jimmy Carter's new book on Israel's occupation of the Palestine.
The librarian told me that I would be 150 on the waiting list for this book, which could take up to 6 months. So I asked how many of the books were in circulation throughout the County system. Although this book is #6 on the NY Times Best Seller list there are only 20 in the entire system!
I asked the librarian how unusual it was for a non-fiction book to have such a long waiting list. He said, "yes," although fiction (like best-selling John Grishim books, for example) are often requested by 150+ readers. I asked what was done when this happens and he said that usually the library orders more books.
Upon returning home I looked up Barak Obama's book on the library system and learned that there are NONE in circulation. This book is #1 on the NY Times Best Seller list plus he has just announced his bid for the Presidency.
Today, with so much information available, who decides what the general public can read...unless they have the cash to buy these important books at retail stores (usually at $28.95 a pop!)?
As an old-school progressive, I recall my college years--during Viet Nam--the idea was to keep us ignorant. I was too busy shopping to keep track of the real facts. I looked up one day, as I was graduating from U.S.C., and there were only a handful of young black men in my class. I suddenly realized that we had lost a generation of young men and my heart has been saddened ever since.
Are we to repeat this crime against our young by keeping them ignorant of the facts? In my opinion, your action points will be moot without the involvement of multi-generations, and the input of all of your constituents. I sincerely believe that the library's holdings may be a good issue to rally around. I have some ideas and would be happy to share with anyone interested.
Most sincerely,

Valerie Shaw, M.PR
[Former organizer, board member and officer of the HHPNC]
