With the approval of the NEDC Executive Board, we are happy to announce that our 2008 election headquarters will be located at 6100 N. Figueroa, Unit E. The lease for this space will run from 07 August through 10 November. On Saturday, August 9th, clubmembers pitched in and did some initial clean up and preparation of the space. Those who participated in the clean up were Carmela Gomes, Carl Matthes, Bill Rumble and myself. And, we would also like to thank Councilmember Jose Huizar, Paul Habib, Sharon Kyle, Dick Price and Karen Wingard for their dropping by and providing other types of support (including morale, logistical and tactical). Our big Grand Opening will be on Wednesday, August 20th in conjunction with the NEDC general meeting and we encourage you to come by. We will have light refreshments, some special guest speakers and a fun time will be had by all. We will have more information on events as they relate to the new Headquarters in the coming days. Information will be sent via email and posted on the NEDC's web site: www.northeastdemocrats.org . Our directive is to partner with other organizations who share the goal of electing Democrats and supporting Democratic ballot issues in 2008. Among those organizations we are reaching out to partner with include (but are not limited to) those serving young Democrats, labor, education, veterans, women, and the Latino, Pacific Islander/Asian American and LGBT communities. We are happy to announce that the confirmed partners with the NEDC include UDAC and Stonewall Democrats. As more partners come on board, we will be announcing them via email and the club web site. The HQ committee has also set up a "wish list", that we are calling The Victory Registry. The Victory Registry contains items that need to be purchased or donated for the successful functioning of the HQ. These items can range from large items for a short term (i.e., from 08 August - 08 November) loan, such as computers and a/v equipment, to items we need to purchase as part of the day-to-day operations of the headquarters, such as office supplies, food + drink for the volunteers; cleaning supplies, etc. The Victory Registry will be available on line at www.northeastdemocrats.org - with hard copies of The Victory Registry also available on site at the new headquarters. Donations can also be made for purchase of the items or for the potential rental of the bigger items on the list. If you have items you would like to donate, you can contact the club at our email address: NortheastHQ©yahoo.com We have also started the process of setting up key committees critical to the functioning of the new HQ. These committees will include members from the organizations that are partnering with NEDC in the headquarters: The Operations Committee will be responsible for handling set up and maintenance of the office along with organizing all GOTV activites. The Programming Committee has already begun work on a proposed plan for events to supplement the GOTV activities. Among the Committee's ideas are: special Saturday talks with elected officials & prominent individuals on the importance of the 2008 election; Sunday morning discussions on key issues for Democrats; Democratic Convention viewing parties and occasional movie screenings or music performances, just for fun. The Fundraising Committee will be involved in all finance activities on behalf of the headquarters. Among those duties will be: all functions necessary to procure items for the HQ, a separate finance coordinator to handle sales of election merchandise (such as yard signs, t-shirts, stickers & buttons) and any other finance activities related to the smooth operation of the headquarters. If you would like to volunteer, contribute items on The Victory Registry, make a donation for the headquarters or hold a fundraiser to help with operating expenses for the headquarters, please contact us by email at NortheastHQ©yahoo.com We hope you will actively take part in this historic and exciting General Election year. By supporting Barack Obama's election, helping to elect Democrats down ticket and working to support the Democratic issues on the November ballot, 2008 can truly be a watershed moment in history. We welcome you and look forward to your active involvement and participation. Tony Scudellari |
